"Gian Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture, The Rape of Proserpina, was created in Italy in 1621-1622. Detailing the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto, the sculpture is often praised for its dynamic rendering of a violent, detailed scene, as well as its accurate rendering of anatomy and life-like skin. Proserpina, also known as Persephone by the Greeks, was taken by Pluto, also known as Hades, from where she was picking flowers in a field, Her mother, Ceres (also known as Demeter), the Goddess of Agriculture, was distraught and angry. She plunged the world into darkness and winter in retribution. Jupiter (in Greek, known as Zeus), father of the gods, worked out a deal that Proserpina would spend half the year underground where she would be Goddess of the Underworld, and half on land as Goddess of Spring. The Greeks, and later the Romans, used her story as an explanation for the changing of seasons."
